Salmon River Fishing
The famous Salmon River in Pulaski, NY. What a place. Since the early 1970's, this river has received migratory runs of Steelhead, King Salmon, Coho Salmon and Brown Trout. In the nearly 40 years since this fishery began, many State and World record Trout and Salmon have been pulled from the waters of the Salmon River and it's destination, Lake Ontario.
What makes the Salmon River so special? The answer is New York State and the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. Without their efforts, this river would be just like any other. Instead, it is a World class fishery like no other.
Because the Trout and Salmon that inhabit this river are migratory, our river fishery is somewhat seasonal. In the Fall, sometime in mid-September, the Chinook (King) and Coho Salmon begin their journey up the 13 miles of river. Many of them will end up at the Fish Hatchery in Altmar. The remainder stay in the main river and spawn naturally before dying. The Salmon are 3.5 years old when this process takes place. Most years the Salmon fishing comes to an end by the late October. Sometime in mid-October, once the river water has cooled down, the Steelhead and Brown Trout make their way into the river. The browns will spawn through November and December, but the steelies come in for one reason...to feed.
The Salmon River is rich with millions of high protein Salmon Eggs, Minnows, Crayfish, Stoneflys and other aquatic life that Steelhead love to eat. These big trout don't spawn till March and April. They choose to come in because they like what's on the buffet. Because of this, the Steelhead fishing is fantastic. The only time of year when there is really nothing going on in the river, is in the Summer between mid-May and mid-September. This is when we spend our days chartering on Lake Ontario.
We use tree methods to catch these large, hard fighting steelies. We back troll with lures such as Hot Shots and Rapalas, we spinfish by either bottom bouncing or drifting floats and we also fly fish. The method we use is dictated by water conditions, time of year and client preference.
Come experience what we and the Salmon River have to offer. Great Salmon and Brown Trout fishing and the best Steelhead fishing in the world, right here in upstate New York.
