This spring will be one to remember. High water, large numbers of fish and good weather all helped to create lots of lasting memories for us and our clients. Now we get the charter boats ready to go for the summer. We will get busy fishing for Brown Trout next week. Till then, we will do some Turkey hunting and the grass might even get cut.

We are almost to the end of our 2008 spring Steelhead season. It has been one to remember. The last few years our steelie fishery has been incredible. We simply have a lot of fish. The reason we don’t know. A combination of the one fish limit and a major increase in the number of wild fish are probably the biggest reasons.

The last couple of days have been very up and down with the weather. The Steelhead fishing has been very good even with the changing weather patterns. Hard south and east winds have hurt the lake fishing recently. We need a good west wind to keep the warm, dirty water pressed up against the shoreline. This concentrates the bait fish and the Brown Trout.

Wow is it good right now. The water dropped last night to 750cfs. The fishing was good before but the drop in water level seemed to concentrate them even more. Fish the fast water. They need to be in the heat in order to get the oxygen they need in the warming water. As long as the water stays up to a reasonable level, the steelies should stay in the river for another couple of weeks at least.

The water was back up to 1800cfs on Monday and Tuesday. With water temps in the low 50 degree range and all the moving water, the steelie action is red hot. It’s been a little tough to hang on to them some days, but we are still landing a bunch of em. The fish are everywhere. Every section of river from the upper fly zone to Douglaston has fish.

Three days, three people and 51 trout landed. It can’t get any better than it is right now in the Salmon River. Although we did say that last year and the year before. We will just have to wait and see. The river is in great condition right now but with the lack of rain up here, I hope that the water stays up. The fish are spread from the top of the river, to the bottom. Egg sacks or worms for the spin fisherman and streamers for the fly guys will all work now. Casting spinners would also be a good idea. Oh, By the way, the Brown Trout fishing in the lake is still good also.

The Steelhead fishing in the river and the Brown Trout fishing on Lake Ontario, are both fantastic right now. We have had blue bird skies with temps in the 70’s for almost a week. The Salmon river is slowly dropping. It will go till 2200cfs till tomorrow afternoon. We hope that the level stays up. The fishing is so good right now, we hate to see anything change. Browns are scattered all along the eastern shore of the lake. Water temps range from 47 - 52 degrees depending on where you are. Keep trolling till you catch a couple of fish and stay there. Don’t wander around. You won’t need to. We put one of the big charter boats in the water today. It’s hard to believe that another lake season is just around the corner.

We have the best of both worlds up here right now. The Steelhead in the Salmon River and the Brown Trout in Lake Ontario are both plentiful and biting well. The last couple of days though, we have found that the best action has been early in the day. The water is coming up again tonight. I think we will chase the browns again tomorrow. Trolling 5 - 10 ft. of water on the eastern shore of the lake, north and south of the Salmon River, with Smithwicks and Thunderstick jr’s has worked well.

The river finally came down to 2400cfs on Sunday night. We fished the river hard on Monday with some success. All the clients caught fish, but we had to work hard for them. We did have quite a few fish on that weren’t landed. The lake fishing has been excellent. The Browns are moving around a lot. Stay patient and keep trolling. When you locate them, be ready for some big fun!

Well the river went from 1800cfs to 5000cfs last night and then to 5800cfs this morning. We couldn’t get on the river today and may not tomorrow. We will have to see what the river does. The fishing on Thursday was great. For the most part, everywhere a lure was put, something grabbed it. It was good to see that the fish were that aggressive, even in this icy cold ( 34 degree ) water. Friday was much slower. A weather system came through with rain and heavy clouds. We usually find that this is good for Steelhead fishing, but we had to work really hard for them. Don’t forget to check the resources page for water levels and weather reports.
